Women in Comedy Festival: Live from Boston

by Intern Brooke Connolly

Women in Comedy Festival: Live from a kitchen in BOSTON!

That would be so cool if the stages were set up like little kitchen models. But, I think WICF is going purist on set design in the theatre this year. Which is still totes cool.

Maria Bamford and Jackie Kashian headline the Second Annual Women in Comedy Festival live from Improv Boston and they are funny ladies.
Maria’s comedy album made Punchline Magazine’s Top 10 Best Comedy Albums of 2009. She came in at #4 (that was said in Casey Kasem’s voice): Maria Bamford: Unwanted Thoughts Syndrome- (Laurie Kilmartin’s: Five Minutes to Myself, the only other woman to make the list came in at #7)

You should get to know Maria and/or Laurie and their comedy. So often CD and DVD comedy efforts go under the mainstream review radar and if you’re like me> you’d consider listening to a comedy album in it’s entirety potentially more exciting than listening to music (sorry Kelly McClure- I love you)

So, March 24th to March 28th consider taking the trip to Boston, or if you are already in the area- you should look here at the schedule and start planning your half-week. BUST’s resident comedian/intern blogger, me>Brooke Connolly, has the honor of performing on Sunday. (As always, I am thankful for the support. Me. Thanking you.)

And a little “kitchen sink” on the festival:
What’s new in 2010: The the second annual Women in Comedy Festival will run March 24th – 28th and will include acclaimed stand-up comedians, improv and sketch groups, writers and filmmakers. There will be panel discussions to increase the dialogue among local female comedians. Workshops with award winning working comedians are available to the public. As part of our effort to use comedy to bridge gaps and grow as women, the festival will host outreach activities. And in an exciting new partnership, this year the festival is teaming up with The Friars Club of New York. The Friars Club will be presenting the WICF Audience Award winner with an invitation to perform at the historic comedy institution.
History:
Michelle Barbera and Maria Ciampa have been creating comedy in its many forms together since 2001. When Barbera said, “Hey, we should do a whole weekend of shows with just women, and some guys too, I guess, since they’re okay”, Maria agreed absolutely. Thus ImprovBoston’s WICF was born. Instead of arguing with critics of female created comedy, the IB WICF invites everyone in to see for himself or herself – and laugh with us. Maria and Michelle are thrilled to have Elyse Schuerman join the team as our third Co-Director. *Thank you to these amazing ladies for making funny lady laugh times a priority in their lives! We have to laugh this life out. Agreed?

Women. Funny. Festival Time.
