Are you counting down the days until BUST’s London Craftacular on Sunday? Because there are only 5 days left! And when the big day comes be sure to stop by Alice Gabb’s table, where her beautifully illustrated stationary and other handmade items, will be on display for the hip crafting community.
Gabb, an illustrator, lives and works in Hackney. She just graduated from the Bath School of Art with a degree in Graphic Design, where she did work based on the dying art of writing letters. She credits Lucy May Schofield, another artist who works with bookbinding and printing, as an enormous influence. Gabb jokes, “I love sending and receiving letters, so they are really designed for my own selfish purposes!”
Alice Gabb Illustration has existed as a company for a year now. She is inspired by old ephemera and vintage typography, and weaves the themes of letter writing and obsolete language into her work. Her handmade stationary, “Letters for a Regal Writer,” includes double sided, hand screen-printed paper which folds into its own envelope.
Gabb’s favourite thing to make is the tweed bear she designed. You can find “Captain Bert,” in her online shop, who is made from brown herringbone tweed and vintage cream wool blanket. With a hand embroidered face and a vintage coronation medal sewn into his front, these tweed bears are adorable and truly unique. Gabb said, “They have evolved over a few years now and I never get tired of making them.”
Gabb had a table at the Craftacular this past summer, and has patronized previous Craftaculars as “an overenthusiastic customer.” She wanted to be a part of Bust Craftacular because of the exciting atmosphere, the DJ’s and the cool workshops. But also because, as Gabb said, “I am a total BUST magazine nerd. I heart BUST.”
