Trump Calls Immigrants “Not People” And “Animals”

Donald Trump continued his racist rhetoric against undocumented Latinx immigrants during an immigration roundtable yesterday, saying, “We have people coming into the country, or trying to come in— and we’re stopping a lot of them—but we’re taking people out of the country. You wouldn’t believe how bad these people are. These aren’t people. These are animals.” Trump has a history of racist language against Latinx immigrants—he’s called them “animals” going back to 2015, and memorably called Mexican immigrants “rapists” and “murderers” while campaigning for president. Many are comparing Trump’s dehumanization of Latinx immigrants to the dehumanization of Jewish people before the Holocaust, black people during slavery, and the Tutsi during the Rwandan genocide. The bases would be used to house children under 18 after the government has separated them from their parents, as well as for children under 18 who arrived at the border alone. The bases are prepared to hold 10,571 children. Read more at the Washington Post.

We Need To Talk About Anti-Mom Bias In The Workplace

In an opinion piece,  Katherine Goldstein argues that along with the #MeToo movement’s goal of eradicating sexual harassment at work, we need a revolution against anti-mom bias at work. She details many cases of women who were fired or passed over for promotions after getting pregnant or becoming parents. “[It’s] noteworthy to me that we’ve never had a high-profile case or national discussion about discrimination against mothers, one that begins to raise in the collective consciousness the notion that this kind of discrimination is wrong and truly harmful. Were there ever to be an Anita Hill-style hearing, complete with egregious details, I believe it would be a game changer,” she writes. Read more at the New York Times.
