Senator Elizabeth Warren Calls Out Republican “Hostage Tactics”

by Fatimah Hameed

In case you hadn’t heard, the government is taking a little break (which does not mean you can smoke weed at school, kids). Also, in case you hadn’t heard, Senator Elizabeth Warren is a badass.

Monday night, she took to the Senate floor to call out Republicans for irresponsibly taking the U.S. economy hostage in order to get what they want. Warren explains that in order to uphold an archaic view on access to birth control, the Republican Party is putting millions of Americans at financial risk.

“The least we can do – the bare minimum that we can do – would be to pass a ‘continuing resolution’ to keep the doors open and the lights on. We could ensure that over a million federal workers aren’t simply sent home for no reason.”

Furthermore, COME ON PEOPLE. The Affordable Care Act, (not to be confused with Obamacare jkjk) is a law now. Once again, the badass Senator from Massachusetts:

“Congress voted for this law. President Obama signed this law. The Supreme Court upheld this law. The President ran for reelection on this law. In fact, his opponent said he would repeal it – and his opponent lost by five million votes. I see things like this and I wonder what alternate reality some of my colleagues are living in. So let me be very clear about what is happening in the real world: The ACA is the law of the land. Millions of people are counting on it—people who need health care coverage, people who need insurance policies that don’t disappear just when they are their sickest. Women will get insurance coverage for birth control. The law is here to stay, and it will stay.”

Let’s hope so. Years from now, when my grandkids teleport home from space school, I’ll be trying to explain why their history microchip-implant-lessons told them that access to health care was ever a debatable issue.
