Recognizing Implicit Bias Could Save Lives
Black women are three to four times more likely than white women to die from pregnancy-related causes nationwide; in New York City, they are 12 times more likely to die, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Black women like Serena Williams have been put in harm’s way after birth because of the color of their skin. This staggering difference needs to be addressed. Cate Blanchett Led a Women’s March at Cannes
Over the Cannes Film Festival’s 72 years, there have only been 82 female directors who have shown at the festival, compared to 1,688 male directors—and only two women directors have been awarded the Palme d’Or, compared to 71 male directors. In response, 82 women marched on Cannes. “As women, we all face our own unique challenges, but we stand together on these stairs today as a symbol of our determination and commitment to progress,” said Cate Blanchett, who led the march. Transgender Prisoners Lose Protections
Last Friday, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons released revisions to its Transgender Offender Manual. The new guidelines now say that the Transgender Executive Council “will use biological sex as the initial determination,” meaning that transgender prisoners will be incarcerated based on sex except “in rare cases.” Read more at NPR.
