One of the Boys

by Neal Querio

I support Bernie Sanders because he is a leader, not because I am trying to impress the boys.

He is not afraid to call out Wall Street for being a corrupt political machine. One of the most powerful statements he has said was the fact that people on Wall Street were allowed to bankrupt the economy without going to prison but a kid caught smoking pot can go away for years and have his whole life destroyed.

His stance on education is realistic and rational. I am not necessarily in favor of free college but why should I have to be paying off student loans for the next 10 to 20 years of my life. It is like the system is punishing me for wanting a good education despite the fact that I may not have the means to finance all of it.

Having grown up with a father suffering from Parkinson’s I cannot imagine what our lives would have been like without health insurance. My parents were fortunate enough to have jobs that provided them with excellent doctor options but not everybody is that lucky. Bernie Sanders recognizes that nobody’s life should be forfeited just because they are without a job or do not work for the right company. He knows that access to healthcare is not a privilege, it is a right.

Bernie Sanders is a president for the people. He is not afraid to go to the rougher parts of the nation and talk to people. He wants to see firsthand what people are struggling with and find out ways get them involved. Sen. Sanders has a way of getting people who otherwise are uninterested in the political process to vote. It’s refreshing to find a candidate that actually cares about his job and the people that put him there.

This devotion to America allows him to see that America’s role of World Policeman is unnecessary and detrimental to the state of our country. Yes, terrorism is a serious threat but America is not the only country in the world that has the capability to handle the danger. He knows that war is a necessary evil of the world but he is also knows that America is a democracy not a militaristic government. He respects those individuals who have served the country but he is not afraid to say that he does not support the fighting.

When you really look at it his ideas are not all that radical at all. People want to say that his ideas are impossible to put into place but they said the same thing about going to the moon. Bernie Sanders looks at the world and sees how it should be not how it is.

I had the opportunity to see Senator Sanders speak in Iowa City before the Iowa Caucus. Seeing him in person and hearing him speak was the best experience any supporter could ever hope for. He has a presence that is hard to ignore. He is honest, funny, and in touch with not only the older generation but younger voters as well.

I believe Hillary Clinton is in it for the power. Yes, she has done fantastic things for women and the healthcare system, but she is a part of the old political system that needs to go. I do not trust her and not because she is a woman but because she is just as power-hungry as the rest of them and at the end of the day, she wants her name in lights.

Bernie Sanders is like a breath of fresh air after drowning in sewage for years. He is not perfect. He makes mistakes, but at the end of the day I believe that he cares what happens to every single American more than what happens to his bank account.

I am a woman and I support Bernie Sanders for President.
