No Girls Allowed: A Tumblr That Will Make You Mad as Hell

by Molly Simms

What do NFL locker rooms and a mobile clinic doling out “Free Prostate Exams!” have in common? They’re all places where you’re unlikely to find women. And that’s unsurprising and fine, but the creator of the genius Tumblr 100PercentMen has blown my mind grapes by pointing out other places where women have yet to tread. And though I’m well-versed in Infuriating Woman’s Issues News, even I had to gasp at some of the inequalities she points out.

Among the boys clubs profiled on the Tumblr: every Secretary General and deputy Secretary General of NATO ever, all of Stephen Colbert’s and Jay Leno’s writing staff (and nearly every late night host–shout out to Joan goddamn Rivers!), everyone on the board of the Film Foundation, the musicians behind NPR’s Top 10 Albums of All Time, and on and on and on.

2013 U.S. Poultry and Egg Association Board of Directors.

Intellectually, I’m aware of the gender gap in tons of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), political, and finance fields, but seeing the graphics on this site really drives home the oddness and injustice of the situation. The blog, which was created by reporter Lydia DePillis of the Washington Post, serves to make visible what can sometimes seem vague and unquantifiable. It’s totally worth a long look, if only to get yourself all riled up on your way to medical school.
