News, Nudity & Nonsense: The Best of VICE Magazine Volume Two

by Kelly McClure

A few things are a given in terms of my consumer practices: I will go see any movie that Parker Posey is in, even though it may or may not be wretched, and I will read anything put out by VICE Magazine.

VICE Magazine recently released their second volume of “best of ” treasures called News, Nudity & Nonsense: The Best of Vice Magazine Volume Two, 2003-2008. The book is a quick read, (it even states inside somewhere that most VICE articles can be read in the length of time it takes to have an average poop,) and is broken up into sections such as “sex,” “drugs,” and “sweet jams,” among others. I found that while ripping through this book one afternoon, I pretty much had the time of my life when anything written by Amy Kellner (Managing Editor for VICE,) or Lesley Arfin (former VICE writer, and writer in general,) would pop up.  The two ladies teamed up on a piece called “OMIGAWD! The VICE Guide to Girls,” and had the following to say about feminism:

“We get so mad when some nitwit says she’s not a feminist. I guess if you’re cool with being raped all the time and having no options in life other than being a baby machine or a prostitute, then yeah, you’re probably not a feminist.”

Another gem within this anthology is an article written by Jake Austen called “Sammy Devil Jr.” that touches upon the candy man’s brief run with the Church of Satan. MIND BLOWER!

A word to the wise if you should purchase this book and then choose to bring it on your daily travels: The back cover features a photo of porn star Sasha Grey choking herself with a silk scarf. I would forget this and be merrily reading away on the train, wondering from time to time why no one was sitting next to me, or in front of me.
