Monument Quilt Visits Queens

by Jackie Leahy

The latest project from art activist group FORCE is crossing the country this month with the goal of upsetting rape culture. At each stop on the Monument Quilt’s 13-city tour, FORCE invites survivors to share their stories on quilt squares. The Monument Quilt’s final stop is in Washington, D.C., where quilt squares will be stitched together to form the message “Not Alone”.

Today the Monument Quilt visits NYC! Visit the Queens Museum from 3pm to 8pm to eat cookies, tell your story, and to act as a witness.

FORCE is known for its other, more controversial projects, including their Pink Loves Consent campaign, but most seem to feel positive about the Monument Quilt project. Described as a “public healing space,” the quilt challenges rape culture by recognizing survivors and attacking the culture of shame around sexual abuse.

The quilt has already visited Chicago and Pittsburgh. Later stops on the tour include Durham, North Carolina, and Baltimore, Maryland. To make a quilt square or arrange a workshop in your city check out the Monument Quilt website.
