Tell us about yourself!
My name is Michelle Edgemont and I own a wedding design and floral business that goes by the same name based in Brooklyn, NY. I specialize in hand crafting custom decorations for unconventional, modern couples. Large backdrops, artsy installations, and colorful decor items are my favorite things to make. In additional to decorating weddings, I produce DIY projects for West Elm, HGTV, A Practical Wedding, and Green Wedding Shoes.
How did you get started?
Four years ago, I was working as a textile designer for a fashion company when I did all of the decorations and flowers for my own wedding to save money. I loved it! A year after that, my sister had her wedding six weeks after my dad passed away from lung cancer. It was one of the first days that everyone was happy and celebrating the creation of their new family. I thought, “this is so much better than fashion!” I worked my butt off for a year to build my website and brand my business. The company officially launched in November of 2011 and has been decorating colorful, fun, unique weddings ever since.
What’s inspiring you right now?
The stories of my couples is always a big inspiration to me. How they met, what they like to do together, and their favorite vacation spots are great inspiration to use to create custom decorations. Beyond weddings, TV set design and editorial fashion shoots are my go-to places to search for awesome ideas.
Any advice for those starting out in the handmade industry?
My first piece of advice is to invest in a photographer or a class on how to use your camera to take amazing photographs of your work. You could have the coolest products, although if the photographs aren’t eye catching in less than a second, no one will be interested. My second piece of advice is to not copy other designers. Your ideas are good enough because they are 110% yours. Keep creating, keep crafting, keep putting it all online. Great photographs of your super cool ideas will grab buyers attention eventually!

It’s all taking place on Saturday, December 14th and Sunday, December 15th at the Metropolitan Pavilion (125 West 18th Street, at 6th Ave.) in N.Y.C. The Craftacular will run from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM both days.
