Loving Frank Lloyd Wright’s Ladies!

by callie watts

I am totally TMZ’n over Frank Lloyd Wright every since one of my besties, Fabrisha Dankins of Drunky Brewster Fame, turned me onto Loving Frank, I think it was last summer. You probably are familiar with Wright’s architecture but you may not know about his life, which should’ve totally been made into a movie by now, unless it already has been and I missed it. Not a documentary but a full blown Hollywood to-do. I suggest when they finally do adapt his life to big screen it gets based on Loving Frank. We can finally have a movie heroine who’s ballsy, honest, intelligent and still warm and loving, I’m talking about Mamah Borthwick Cheney ya’ll. Twork this way…The debut novel by Nancy Horan is about the love affair between Wright and feminist Cheney that ‘began’ in 1909 and ended in a blood bath at their famous home Taliesin in 1914. The novel is loosely based off news clipping, diary entries, letters between Wright and Cheney as well as Mamah’s exchanges with Swedish feminist Ellen Kay. Mamah’s struggle with the terms and definitions of feminism, the expectations of her social class (going to live with your lover in Europe while leaving your husband and two kids in the US is not exactly lady-like in 1909), her role as a mother, wife, best friend, and mistress kept me turning pages and constantly reflecting on a feminist’s role in society. Horan also got me totally obsessed with Wright’s work, allowing me to understand his method and motivation for each home. I even attempted to go see one of his houses in VA when I was home for the holidays, The Pope-Leighey House, but then I found out it was moved from its original location I decided the trip was pointless. After all the point of Wright’s work was for houses to blend with the scenery and compliment each other. Another book just dropped about Wright, but this time it touches on all the ladies in his life, The Women by T.C. Boyle (Viking). I can’t wait to get my hands on it. If any of his other special ladie friends are half as interesting as Mamah then for the love of leading ladies give us this man’s life on the big screen. Oh, and you know drugs are all up in it! Make this damn movie already. Put Brad Pitt in it or what’s his nuts from Basket Ball Diaries, whateves it doesn’t matter who plays Wright to me, I just want a strong amazing Mamah! Any ideas? Anyone care but me? Oh that pic is of the original Taliesin, I got it here .
