I could go on for hours about the annoyances of having long hair: having to specially schedule time to wash my hair every week, making sure to tie it up every night to prevent knots, dealing with the jungle of knots that develop in spite of my tying it back the night before…I’ll spare you all the rest of my grievances.
But as of this past Saturday, I have been relieved my crowning glory – all 21 inches of it! Fed up with having to maintain all of my hair and just feeling like changin’ it up, I headed to the Salon Off Main in my hometown on Long Island for the big cut (my dad usually cuts my hair at home – he has my whole life – but this special change merited a rare trip to a salon). My fabulous hairdresser, Melissa, upon seeing the photo of Anne Hathaway I brought as a rough guideline, seemed to be more nervous about the cut than I was! She must have asked me at least 5 times if I was sure I wanted it that short, that I should go shoulder-length first and then decide if I wanted it shorter. But I had come with an iron resolve and insisted that it all had to go – and by George, it was going to go!
Voila! A little over an hour later, I had a lovely, chic short haircut – and a plastic bag containing not one, but two ponytails of my clipped hair. Once I made the decision to cut my hair, I also decided that I would donate it to charity. I chose Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that gives high-quality hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada who suffer from hair loss because of long-term medical illnesses. They ask for a minimum of 10 inches per donation (no dyed or graying hair is accepted, though!). Since I had extra long hair, I was able to donate twice!
I think that donating hair is a great thing to do – other popular ways to donate are through Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program and Wigs for Kids. I loved donating my hair and adore my new haircut. It’s perfect for the warm weather that’s on the way – and for all of the cute hair accessories that have been hitting stores!
