Julie Klausner’s New Show Is ‘Too Gay for Brooklyn’

by Kelly Maxwell

Julie Klausner is much more interested in that moist looking coffee cake on Mad Men than the bloody dragon realness on Game of Thrones. She composes impromptu odes to her tuxedo cat, Jimmy Jazz. She is a lady who loves kitsch, musical theater, and cabaret (and IS NOT ashamed to announce it to the world). This is why we love her.

Julie is completely upfront about the things she loves (noodles, dogs eating things the shouldn’t and then being ok, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills) and totally honest about the things she hates (Pauley Perrette, lizards, and Mario Lopez’s shame-relationship with food).

If you haven’t been listening to her podcast, How Was Your Week, then you haven’t really been living. Every week she will enter your headphones with an improvised monologue, a show tune, and probably a dozen or so references to your favorite parts of pop culture. It is so much more than a comedy podcast with interviews. HWYW is an open invitation into her life. She won’t hide what she is feeling and she will entertain the socks off of her devoted audience in the process.

Her newest live show, Too Gay For Brooklyn, is a cabaret inspired night of camp, belting, and earnest nerdiness that is totally not fit for the tragically hip of Brooklyn. The previous live HWYW’s have sold out Brooklyn’s Bell House and her fans have been clamoring for more. Her shows have been a smash hit with the too-cool-for-school set and now she will be invading Joe’s Pub for a taste of something different and delightful.

Too Gay For Brooklyn will be at Joes Pub June 18th and 19th.  We can expect two nights of Carol King meets Nancy Sinatra meets Loretta Lynn, all with a sprinkle of comedy and sass. Yes, there will be sass.

So if you are in the NYC area, get your tickets fast. If you aren’t, please tune into How Was Your Week every week, or catch her on Vulture, Twitter, and tumblr. Julie will also be hosting our 20th Anniversary Party on July 25th, at the Bell House.
