It’s Never Too Late to Start Living for Yourself!

by Samantha Albala

Writer and motivational speaker Robin Korth recently wrote a piece titled “My ‘Naked’ Truth” on Huffington Post this summer, speaking about her experience in online dating. The now, nearly 60-year-old radiant lady is someone full of poignant (and funny) stories with a side of female empowerment!

On her blog she talks about how she spent the first 51 years of her life living for other people. The idea of what is expected from women of all ages due to gender roles is down-right frustrating and crippling. Korth’s decision to live for herself is a realization that we all should have ASAP in our own lives. She advocates for embracing your age, but more than that, embracing all of your senses, vibes, intuition…your self. Amen.

In Korth’s article she describes the recent experience of dating a man that claimed her naked body was too old for him… WHAT THE HELL!? He said, “I have spoiled myself over the years with young women. I just can’t get excited with you. I love your energy and your laughter. I like your head and your heart. But, I just can’t deal with your body.” (He couldn’t deal—and now that feeling is mutual. Later dude.) Following what he thought was a tactful comment, he went on to make a list of visual requirements for Korth in order to continue their sexual relationship. Did she go for this? Hell no! She hung up the phone, picked up her self-worth honoring all parts of herself, her body, her mind, and her heart.

(Side note: The creep’s name was Dave, and I can’t help but be reminded of the sculpture by Michelangelo—that cocky bastard!)

Korth’s message is plain and simple, do not let other people change, define, or dictate your worth. You are exactly as you should be, and no dude should ever tell you what they “need” for you to be, sexually, or otherwise. You know what feels right and what is right, even if you have been ignoring that voice at times.

My motivation isn’t to feed into the cliché of “love yourself!” (although please do, you are the most important person in your life!), but it is to live for yourself. No one, no human, no society, nothing should get in the way of you caring for and enjoying life! Life is awesome! Sure, understanding yourself is a freakin’ messy and endless process, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun (and sometimes that means dumping jerks that expect you to be something else). Isn’t this why we all embraced feminism? To learn about ourselves, empower ourselves, and the rockin’ ladies around us?

Robin Korth also has a book out called Soul on the Run and a Facebook page to give you frequent reminders of how awesome you are.
