“It’s Like Santa, For Your Vagina!” This Tampon Ad is the Best Tampon Ad Your Eyeballs Will Ever See

by Mary Grace Garis

Imagine Don Corleone played by an 11-year-old, menstruation-obsessed little girl. That’s this video.

It follows the touching story we’re all familiar with: a little girl feels isolated at camp, until she becomes the first to get her period. Then she becomes an oppressive dictator who deals out tampons and unwarranted advice to her fellow campmates. #kidsthesedays

It’s cool especially because they stray away from the lame tropes we usually see in tampon ads. They’re not using cutesy euphemisms for “vagina,” all the little girls look appropriately miserable (instead of dancing on the beach in white dresses) and there’s no sign of blue water ANYWHERE!

Actually, I’ve probably seen a variation of this in a Tampax commercial.

In fact, the Camp gyno (as our heroine titles herself) demonstrates how menstruation works with a ketchup bottle and a Dora the Explorer doll.

I can’t make this up.

So why exactly is this happening?

It’s an ad for the Hello Flo Starter kit, a monthly care package that includes tampons, pads and treats. Fancy!

It’s a really cool idea, especially for young girls, and I wish I had it when I was 11. Maybe I’m crazy, because I never looked at my period as the “red badge of courage” so much as “a live, waking nightmare.”

And even though we got two emergency pads in our 5th grade mandatory puberty class, I would’ve appreciated a care package with candy. Sort of a consolation prize for my life being ruined for the next 40 years.

But enough about that, you can watch this genius ad below!
