High Fashion Collides With the Great Outdoors

by Intern Lauren

What a breathtaking view: The sky, lightly coated with dollops of clouds, the setting sun creating pretty shadowy streaks across the sandy landscape, and that nice gigantic pair of…legs?

This was basically my reaction upon seeing the above collage from Carl E. Smith’s National Parks collection. Using snippets straight out of high fashion magazines, the artist and graphic designer incorporates a taste of glitzy fashion into a variety of gorgeous, natural landscapes and oddly enough, he actually makes it seem normal—at least in the collages where the models’ heads are at least partially intact. The others are a bit reminiscent of the notorious leg lamp from A Christmas Story, no?

Throughout the images, Smith enlarges his chopped up models to be super-human size, and places them in seemingly natural positions, as if it’s totally normal to be perched half naked on top of a mountain, strolling down the side of a valley into a crisp blue lake, or lounging around on the contours of a breaking wave’s sea foam. Contrasting get-ups are tied into the landscapes by removing the model’s eyes and in one case, the lips, combining background colors with the overall look. Though I can’t deny the fact that some of these are flat out creepy looking, I personally want one (or all eleven) of these on my bedroom wall. But what do you think, BUSTies? Yay or nay?
