Girl on Grill Action: Foodie Mag Apologizes for Dude Food Comments

by Kelly Maxwell

Who else is sick of seeing this sexist bullshit masquerading as tongue-in-cheek comedy all over the internet? Foodie site Bon Appetit has started a food series called Dudes Grilling Things. Grilling as a dude’s domain is nothing new, but the post stated that women couldn’t grill with the boys, dig sports, or BE A FREAKING FORTUNE 500 CEO! What in the royal fuck!

Is this really what these dudes think of a lady who tries to grill?

This kind of lazy sexism isn’t edgy. Is it worth it to issue retraction after retraction, after collectively ostracizing a majority of your readers?

According to The Braiser, (Yesterday) Bon Appetit ran a video roundup entitled “Dudes Grilling Things,” with a lead that originally read:

“It’s a cliche because it’s true: men like grilling things. Women like grilling things too, of course, but at this point in history, grilling, like crying about sports and and being a Fortune 500 CEO, is firmly located in the domain of Dude.”

It now reads:

“It’s a cliche because it’s true: men like grilling things. Women like grilling things too, of course, but at this point in history, grilling, like crying about sports and [inadvertently sexist attempt at humor deleted], is firmly located in the domain of Dude.”

Along with an editor’s note at the top, which reads:

“Editor’s Note: We’re aware that some readers did not like our attempt to be tongue-in-cheek here. We in no way meant to imply that women aren’t just as masterful at the grill.”He goes on to promote some of the mag’s more lady-friendly stories.

Ohhh the joys of Stock Photos Of Women Grilling.

We are still talking about cooking, right?  Kat Kinsman, who is managing editor for CNN’s food site, Eatocracy, took to tweeting asap to call out the craziness. Follow the entire convo, here Her comments, along with the rest of the internet reaction brought the site to include the editor’s note above. Can we even call that a real retraction?

Kat Kinsman’s tribute to flame. Makes me wanna grill some shit!!!!

Listen up bros of the ‘Net, women actually eat (much to your surprize!) and there are ton’s of women who love to throw down in the pit. Give me a rack of ribs and you might just lose a finger. The man-cave grill-master-of-the-universe script is old news.

I want to know about people bucking the system, not just hiding in hackneyed culinary-cliches of the past. Who is with me? Who want’s some BBQ, with a side of extra sass?

Mama likes. Nomnomnomnomnom
