Craftacular Sneak Peek: Twig Terrariums

by Amalia Graziani

The inherent excellence of miniaturized items cannot be denied (by me). From tiny gummy hamburgers to model cars/planes/cities to handbag-sized dogs, there is something tiny out there to evoke irrational delight in everyone. Over at the Twig Terrariums, talented creators Michelle Inciarrano and Katy Maslow take things a step further by creating adorable, glass-encased ecosystems and sending tiny figurines on adventures inside them. Just too cute. They remind me of artist Slinkachu’s famous “little people” collection placed in a dynamic, living setting.

Twig began on a whim when Michelle (a self-proclaimed plant nerd) turned Katy (a skeptical poet) on to repurposing spare jars and glasses. Katy was instantly hooked. The two spent a year playing with different vessels, styles, and plants before settling on their perfect combinations. An insane amount of thought and care goes into creating these little gems, and it shows. My favorites from their readymade collection feature corked vessels with a retro lady figurine holding an “I Love You” sign in one and a bloodthirsty zombie next to a tombstones in the other.

Toeing the line between decor and art, these creations are remarkably well priced (a readymade one-of-a-kind terrarium goes for around $125) and are basically unbeatable when it comes to cute, personal gifts. Aaaaand you can learn to build your own tiny Twig universe right in their Brooklyn studios. They’re perfect. Just look:
