Batwoman Just Wants to Marry Her Girlfriend; DC Says “No!”

by Katie Fustich

In case you’re just tuning in, Batwoman and her girlfriend are engaged. In fact, they have been since Issue #17 (aka February). With the fictional wedding of the decade just around the corner (no comment to Game of Thrones fans), it looks like the biggest clam jam to the whole affair isn’t a mad scientist who grew twelve legs after an accident in a stem-cell research lab, or even a nutjob mother-in-law, it’s none other than the publisher of the comic itself: DC.

A recent blog post by Batwoman writing team W. Haden Blackman and J.H. Williams revealed that DC has laid the smackdown on plans for upcoming issues. The co-authors said the publisher requested that they “alter or completely discard many long-standing storylines.” One of these storylines is, no doubt, the wedding between Batwoman (Kate Kane) and her girlfriend Maggie.

Wait…what now? This decision seems to make little sense for a comic that has spent the majority of its run being a pioneer for the representation of lesbians in the genre! Exhibit A: at the start of the series, Batwoman was forced to leave the United States Military Academy after suspicions arose concerning her sexual identity. Organizations such as GLAAD have given the series nothing but accolades, and now this? Maybe one of the higher-ups was concerned Batwoman would turn into a total diva when selecting the font for the invites? Did someone sense Maggie was getting cold feet? Considering the fact that DC has declined a comment to numerous sources, it seems like they don’t really know why either.
