This might be the creepiest documentary ever.
An Australian documentary team has auctioned off the virginities of a man and a woman known as Alexander and Catarina. The bidding, which took place on a website called Virgins Wanted, began on September 17 and closed on October 24. Catarina had 15 bids ranging from $1 to the winning $780,000, from a Japanese man called “Natsu.” Alexander had 8 bids ranging from $1,000 to the winning $3,000, from a Brazilian woman called “Nene B.”
The whole story shows just how differently virginity is viewed in women and men, and not just because of the huge differences in bidding price. The virgins were marketed very differently, with the Virgins Wanted Facebook page posting 32 photos of Catarina in various stages of undress, and only four photos of Alexander, fully clothed in a karate uniform.
Likewise, Catarina has become a viral sensation, while Alexander has been comparatively ignored. Publications like the NY Daily News and Britain’s Daily Mail have featured articles focusing exclusively on Catarina, who has said she will donate the money to charity.
Virgins Wanted’s terms and conditions state that Catarina will undergo a gynecological exam to prove her virginity, while Alexander just has to have two family members vouch for him.
Now that the auction is over, the winning bidders will have sex with the virgins on board a plane flying between Australia and the U.S., in an attempt to avoid prostitution laws, according to the Huffington Post.
However, Virgins Wanted may all be a giant hoax. Journalist William K. Wolfrum has pointed out many inconsistencies in the Virgin Wanted story, including the fact that the production company “has, at best, done some wedding videos”; that everyone involved has minimal exposure on social media; that the media has had limited access to the virgins; and that contradictory information has been given about what, exactly, the documentary will include.
I guess we’ll see what happens next – whatever it is, it’s going to be weird.
