The ‘Wonder Woman’ Sneak Peek Makes All Our Feminist Dreams Come True

by Olivia Harrison

Wonder Woman fans got a special treat last night during CW’s “Dawn of the Justice League” television special. Director and comic book author Kevin Smith talked to the Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics Geoff Johns about the upcoming Wonder Woman film. In addition to chatting about the film, the two offered a sneak peek of the 2017 movie and unsurprisingly, it looks EPIC.

According to Johns, “Wonder Woman’s like one of the greatest superheroes out there, but people don’t know her origins like they know Superman’s origin or Batman’s origin. So, what we want to do in the film is really tell people who she is, where she comes from, and why she does what she does.” My initial reaction to this was total incredulity. Like COME ON. Doesn’t everyone know about the Amazons, Paradise Island, and Captain Steve Trever. No? You mean not everyone studied her as a feminist pop culture icon in multiple women studies classes? Hmm that’s weird. I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that people are more familiar with the stories of male superheroes, so I’m glad they’re starting from the beginning and really giving Wonder Woman her due. Johns even says, “She’s an Amazon warrior. She’s the best fighter in the DC Universe. She has strength and speed, and she’s been training her whole life for war.” Suck it, Batman.

I think I’m most excited that Wonder Woman is being directed by a woman, and it’s none other than Patty Jenkins, who is best known for writing and directing Monster. In the sneak peek Jenkins says, “The greatest thing about Wonder Woman is how good and kind and loving she is, yet none of that negates any of her power.” Clearly, she gets it.
