BUSTies, Mother’s Day is upon us, and it’s time to honor all of the mamas in our lives–both real and fictional. Here, for your reading pleasure, are five of our favorite TV moms. Enjoy!
Clair Huxtable, The Cosby Show
In my humble opinion, Clair Huxtable is the perfect TV mom. Her formidable lawyer-ing skills were often put to work dealing with the crazy kids, and her career in no way kept her from being a caring and firm mother. She, like any other mom, had her flaws, but accepted and addressed them with grace and a smile. It also doesn’t hurt that she had some of the flyest outfits around.
Morticia Addams, The Addams Family
Yes, she was creepy and spooky, mysterious and kooky, but the Addams Family matriarch was also a damn good mother. She made sure her children upheld the Addams family way by keeping things from getting too “pleasant,” while also encouraging individuality in her kids. Like Clair Huxtable, she also had killer fashion – the original Goth Girl, she was the first mom to realize that black was the new pink.
Lucille Bluth, Arrested Development
So she may not be the “best mother” around, but you gotta admit, Lucille Bluth is hilarious and crafty. While her husband was behind bars for fraud and “light treason,” she managed to stealthily consolidate the family assets and power – all while downing enough booze to make Don Draper and Roger Sterling blush.
Lorelai Gilmore, Gilmore Girls
I’m not ashamed to say that I wish I were a Gilmore Girl. Fast-talking, witty, and fun, Lorelai Gilmore was everything you could want in a best-friend mom. Though she didn’t have the greatest relationship with her own mother, her desire for the best for her daughter was enough to go to her parents to ask for money for a prestigious private school (and eventually Yale). Even though she raised Rory all on her own since she was a teenager, she never let her own dreams fall by the wayside – she worked her way up from maid, to inn manager, to opening up her own inn.
Lucy Ricardo, I Love Lucy
One of the most iconic characters of television history is also one of the most iconic mothers. Lucy was loud, zany, and sassy – and endlessly devoted to her family. Even after “Little Ricky” was born she never forgot about how important show business was to her – in fact, she incorporated him into her love of showbiz by fostering his musical genius. We loved Lucy no matter what – whether she was eating her way through a candy factory, taking care of Little Ricky, or just begging to be in the show.
