One Guy Turns Tinder into Comedy Gold

by Claire Filipek

“Hello Let’s Date” is a hilarious blog of screenshots taken from what looks like the dating app Tinder. And yes, I know that from personal experience.

While the blog can definitely be seen as a “troll’s guide to Internet dating,” it also showcases the ridiculousness of online dating. Can anyone really find a mate by looking at four pictures and then having a menial conversation?

The game, especially in the case of Tinder, is often about spending a conversation beating around the bush about being horny at 2 in the morning.

However, the dude behind “Hello Let’s Date” is less concerned with connecting to his matches or having a “sexy” conversation. Instead he writes corny pick-up lines or quirky facts. It’s especially funny because he takes everything to a crazy unreal place. For example, an opening line saying “hay is for horses” leads to the fact that he “likes to talk about horse diets” because he “majored in horseology” and has a “minor in diets/euthanasia”.

I find the blog most relatable because after thirty minutes on Tindr during my winter break, I felt inundated with conversations with creepy people. There were needles in the haystack, but overall it was dismal. This guy’s offbeat wit and comedic genius is so charming and refreshing. Especially amidst a sea of pick-up lines from guys who make no effort to hide that they just want to get in your pants, as a friend put it, the  “unoriginal horny bastards” of Tinder.

A typical conversation game that guys suggest is called “20 questions.” And I remember one guy asked me, “What is your favorite body part?” And it was at this point I realized that while Tinder was really not my thing, it could still be so very entertaining. So I answered, “Well I just love my whole body because I am amazing.” I don’t think the guy was satisfied with this answer, so I responded, “okay, truthfully, my wenis is off the charts.” In retrospect, I should have just went all the way and said “penis”.

Anyway, this guy definitely took my game to the next level. And his captions are everything. Like this post is captioned “some people are more shallow than they seem”:

The blog continues to be updated, so go and check it out! Bonus, as another feature of the site, you can ask HLD for dating advice.

Also I really hope that his snarky messages act as a Tinder filter, and he eventually finds a match that appreciates them.
