Well we’ve long been hoping and praying and refreshing our news feeds constantly for any word on whether Melissa McCarthy will return as Sookie St. James in the upcoming Netflix Gilmore Girls revival. I’m sorry to say it, but I think it might finally be time to throw in the towel on hoping for Sookie’s return.
In an interview with E! News last week, McCarthy shared that she was not asked to join the cast of the revival. Of course that seems totally weird since, for many of us, Sookie was kind of the heart and soul of the show. McCarthy agreed that it was weird, but she explained that she thought there was some kind of miscommunication. “I think they thought I was busy, and then by the time it did come up, then I actually was busy,” said McCarthy. I guess that’s the price you pay for being a break-out star, but it doesn’t exactly seem fair.
McCarthy has no hard feelings though. She told E! she was actually “thrilled” it was happening. “I loved that show, and I think the fans for that show are super loyal and great, and I will watch every single one of them,” said the Emmy-winning actress.
So how in the world are they going to explain Sookie’s absense? Especially since Jackson, her husband, was one of the first supporting actors to join the revival cast. Apparently, the current theory is that Sookie St. James took a job cooking for the Queen of England, so she now lives in London. But why would she leave Jackson and her kids in Stars Hollow and not return once in an entire year? Not that I really blame her for leaving since Jackson kind of sucked, with the whole lying about his vasectomy thing. Still, a lot of explaining is going to need to happen before I buy this storyline about Sookie’s absence. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what they write. In the meantime, let’s pour one out for our lady Sookie St. James.
