So while the rest of the world was binge-watching Arrested Development this past weekend, HBO premiered the “too gay for mainstream theaters”, Behind the Candelabra. The movie has become HBO’s highest rated flick in over a decade. We might know EXACTLY why.
Sure, Michael Douglass as Liberace was pretty awesome. But it was Matt Damon, rocking bedazzled speedos and feathered hair, who stole our hearts—and other parts. We always knew Damon was cute, but who know he was keeeeee-yoooooot?! Hot damn, Damon!

Damon totally transformed, both in terms of his acting and his appearance, to portray Scott Thorson. Liberace took Thorson on as a lover and confidant, despite their forty (40!) year age difference. The relationship was the perfect combo of drugs, drama, and glitter and had biopic written all over it.

Behind the Candelabra is based on an autobiography, written by Thorsen, where he describes his complicated relationship with Liberace. You can expect tons of father/son drama, lovers feuding, and rhinestones (ohmygawd the rhinestones!). The costumes alone will leave you speechless. Steven Soderbergh, of Magic Mike, Traffic, and Ocean’s Eleven fame, directed the film, andfought like hell to get it made. It is a total bummer that Damon and Douglas won’t be eligible for Best/Supporting Oscars, but we all know that they deserve some crazy credit for this. And speaking of bums–Damon’s should really win something!

And yes, we also enjoyed Robb Lowe as the creepy, ladyboner-killer plastic surgeon.
