Why You Should Make A Podcast Right Now

by Lindsay Harris Friel

The phrase “we should make a podcast” is as ubiquitous right now as fondue parties were in the ’70s. Though there are thousands available right now, there’s still room for yours.

Why should you make a podcast right now? Don’t think of this as a trendy hobby, or a money-making scheme. A good podcast is like a time capsule, except instead of photographs, newspaper clippings and ribbons, you can store your thoughts, feelings, and opinions, bundled up the uniqueness of your own voice.

It’s easier than ever, too. New apps make it easy to research, record, and even edit sound files on a tablet or phone. Microphones are less expensive and easier to purchase. Media hosts walk you through the process of uploading and publishing your files. Some even offer promotion tools and transcription services. Web-based tools such as Alitu make creating a podcast as easy as posting on social media.

Will it make you rich and famous? There are no guarantees. However, persistence and patience can pay off in personal impact. Your podcast might not be important to everyone, but for a small audience all over the world, you can become very important.

I started making a podcast with friends, five years ago, during a period of unemployment. The podcast was proof that I was good at project management, creative thinking, and getting work done, which helped me get better jobs. I kept making podcasts, and now I get to help others make theirs with The Podcast Host. The podcasting community is pretty darn supportive of each other. It’s very good company.

The listening experience builds intimacy and trust. Releasing new episodes on a consistent basis makes people include you in their habits (such as exercise, chores, or crafting). Your podcast can become the companion that helps people get through their daily grind and think about life differently.

The world is changing at a rapid pace. Your experience is unique. If you have been thinking about making a podcast, but just haven’t taken the risk, this is your sign. Take the leap.
