Is Tavi Losing Interest in Fashion?

by Kristina Uriegas-Reyes

Tavi of Style Rookie’s newest post might come as a shock to some as she questions her passion for fashion, but surprisingly, I think it’ll make a lot of fashion lovers identify with her. Well maybe not in a “Can I have a normal conversation with Anna Wintour while wearing a Feminist sweater given to me by Kathleen Hanna?” kind of way, but in a growing up and finding that hardcore passion for something can come and go or wane in intensity. Over the past three years, her blog has really grown in popularity, but her excitement never seemed to wane..until now. I love her “no fear” attitude when it comes style and, no lie, am a bit jealous of what she’s done by fourteen, but it makes me respect her a little more for not getting caught up fashion industry BS.

I definitely saw some of myself in her entry (Myself now, not at her age..I was so not that cool), but I attended my first NY Fashion Week show last season and was just plain excited. While the fashion masses dressed head to toe in black and stilettos, I wore a crazy sweater and enormous bow on my head. It was incredibly fun, but it did almost seem like 90% percent of fashion week had nothing to do with the clothes themselves. As she mentions in her post, “I love fashion but it’s disappointing when you have to sift through a lot of junk before you get to, like, the clothes, and the whole point of it all.” I think it’s something all fashion lovers have to come to terms with.

Her post has already garnered over 100 encouraging comments, but I think Tavi will be just fine. It’s possible to love fashion and still have room for other passions to emerge over time. It’s also possible to love style, but not necessarily Fashion with a capital F..if you know what I mean.

I also just want to note though, how BUST-tastic is it that she’s a stylish self-proclaimed feminist? I’ve noticed how reluctant people are to claim the title and she wears it proudly on her chest.
