I’ll See Your #Thinspo and Raise You a #Sitspo

by Hannah Baxter

Full disclosure: I am writing this from a chair. I’m not doing squats, I’m not lunging across the office, I’m not secretly clenching my butt cheeks together while envisioning my brand new J. Crew neon yellow bikini settling perfectly on my teardrop behind. I’m wearing shorts that are maybe just slightly shorter than necessary, but that’s because Forever 21 was having a super legit sale and IT’S BASICALLY SUMMER OUTSIDE! This weather is insane y’all. Regardless, I am a total #thinspo failure at the moment, and I don’t care one bit. I am a #Sitspo convert, and proud of it! Read on to discover your new best motivational friend.

Maybe you haven’t heard of #thinspo or it’s thinly-veiled cousin, #fitspo? You’ve probably been munching on your afternoon chocolately goodness like a boss and haven’t noticed. If so, I applaud you. If you’re a part of the lucky masses who’ve been bombarded with images ranging from the thigh gap to the aforementioned office workout regime then you know the trending hashtag as well as I. Now, I am not condoning gluttony. It is definitely not my favorite deadly sin (why hello SLOTH). Working out and staying healthy is important, which is why I shell out a good chunk of my paycheck to maintain a monthly hot yoga membership. I even recently visited The Running Company and endured the, slightly humiliating, experience of running on a treadmill for a store full of employees and customers to outfit myself with a pair of shoes that might fix my overpronation. Fellow bow-legged ladies, back me up here.

The effort to remain fit and healthy is there, to varying degrees, depending on my mood. I do not need the Internet or the media to prod me into a warped definition of fit, AKA, thin. Let’s state here and now, thinness, or lack thereof, does not equate to healthy. Bodies, as BUSTies well know, come in all shapes and sizes, and that rocks. If you want some more information about BMI, diabetes, and fitness check out this article.

It’s about time we have some motivation for bucking the #thinspo trend and embracing our individual choices in regards to how we voluntarily mold our already perfect bodies. #Sitspo is the newest and greatest trend in, what New York Magazine calls, “anti-motivation for the self-satisfied” with dozens of images encouraging women to rejoice in their decisions to eat, whether that is a donut or a kale salad, work out or be lazy, and generally bask in the glow of high self-esteem.

That should be the focus of this diet psychosis, the mental and physical health of an impressionable generation of women, NOT the selfie-potential of your latest thinsporation. Check out more of the brilliant, funny and downright awesome images that mark the beginning of the #sitspo takeover!
