Cute, Gross, or Progressive? There’s a New Couples-Only App

by Mary Rockcastle

Sexting is slowly becoming a less taboo topic, and I’m all for it. As long as you’re two consenting adults OLD ENOUGH TO LEGALLY BE HAVING SEX then cool, I say send pics of your wiggly bits to each other all you want.

The big issue I do see with sexting is the unwanted sharing of photos and video, which can often lead to the widespread distribution of revenge porn. If only there was some way to send naughty photos with a guarantee that they would delete themselves!

Think Snapchat? Think again. Snapchat, the picture-sharing app, is known for sending pictures to friends that show themselves for a limited amount of time. However, these pictures are able to be screen shot on devices like iPhones, so there’s no guarantee that your sexy snap will disappear completely.

That’s where the new app Couple comes in. Couple is branded as an app for sharing private texts, photos, and video between people. Available for iOS and Android, the app is the newest leap in modern sexting between monogamous couples. The promotional video shows a cute couple sending each other pictures of raw fish and flowers but we all know what’s really going down here.

The pros of this app are revolutionary for those who enjoy the sexy texting from time to time. The app takes steps to make sure text, video, and photos can’t be saved or screenshot (as long as the sender says so).

However, I can’t overlook the major flaw in this app: you can only “couple” with one person at a time. This means you can only send safe pics or texts to one person, which may not be a problem for many. I’m just not a fan of the assumption that only monogamous couples should be allowed to sext privately. I should be able to send raunchy pics to whomever I please, whether or not I’m in a monogamous relationship or not. This app alienates polyamorous people and those in open relationships along with giving off a bit of a slut-shamey vibe.

But flaws aside, this app is a HUGE step in the right direction for private sexting. The closer we get to safe sexting, the harder it will be to upload revenge porn. And that’s the main thing, at the end of the day.
