A Wiig-less ‘Bridesmaids 2’?

by Intern Sarah

Hands up if you’ve seen Bridesmaids! OK, keep your hands up if you’ve seen it more than once. Trust me, you’re not alone. People all around the world—girls and guys alike—fell in love with the comedy film Bridesmaids last year. I’m sure many of them would love to see a sequel, too—that is, if you’re not too disillusioned by the fact that 90% of sequels are only half as good, at most, as the original. (Believe me, I’ve seen some duds.)

But if a sequel does come to pass, one key figure may not be involved: Kristen Wiig, the co-writer and one of the stars of the film. Wiig has stated that she has no plans to do a sequel, and is working on other things. There’s all kinds of speculation going on about why it’s taking so long for a second movie to be officially confirmed, and why its writer isn’t going to participate. Some people think there was a conflict between Wiig and the studio, who they believe didn’t give her and the cast a big enough bonus compared to the amount of money the film made. (The bonus they did receive, by the way, was $100,000—I can’t imagine that being “underwhelm[ing],” as one article called it.)

Regardless of what actually happened, negotiations with Wiig haven’t changed her mind, and producer Judd Apatow isn’t particularly eager to go on without her. So it might be a while before we actually see a Bridesmaids sequel. But what we can look forward to are other exciting projects from Kristen Wiig! With the film so successful, she’s keeping busier than ever. According to an article from The Hollywood Reporter, Wiig appears in Friends With Kids in March, and will be working on a Robert de Niro movie (directed by Sean Penn) this summer, among other things. So while we may have to wait for more of our favorite wedding party, we can rest assured that the brain behind the bridesmaids is up to all kinds of cool stuff!
