Sha’Carri Richardson Is The Newest Olympian And The Fastest Woman In America: “I Just Want The World To Know That I’m That Girl”

by Stamatina Copulos

On Saturday, Sha’Carri Richardson was named the fastest woman in America. The 21-year-old hailing from South Dallas burned up the track with her fiery orange hair and as she completed the 100-meter dash in 10.86 seconds.

Thirty meters before the finish line, Richardson pointed at the clock, knowing what she was about to accomplish. After completing the race, she went to the stands and straight into her grandmother’s embrace.

In an interview with NBC immediately after her race, Richardson revealed that her biological mother passed away last week. She thanked her grandmother and her family for supporting her. Her message was that no matter what obstacles she faces, she will always prevail.

“Flo-Jo came to the track and knew she was going to dominate,” Richardson told AP News. “If the amazing Flo-Jo had long nails, there was no excuse why I couldn’t have long nails.”

At the end of her third year at LSU, Richardson will represent Team USA this summer in Tokyo. She’ll be known not only for her speed but her “brash yet bubbly” personality, according to the Washington Post. Her perfect form is as noticeable as her love for her family, her long nails, and flowing, fiery orange hair.

“My girlfriend actually picked my color,” Richardson said Friday, according to USA Today. “She said it, like, spoke to her, the fact that it was just so loud and vibrant, and that’s who I am.”

Originally slated to run the 200-meter dash, Richardson announced today that after winning the 100-meter dash, she will only be running the latter in Tokyo.

“I just want the world to know that I’m that girl,” Richardson said after the win.
