Lizzo’s “Water Me” Is Your New Self-Love Anthem

by Violet Marmur

If you haven’t heard of Lizzo yet, you’re welcome. The Minneapolis-based alt hip-hop artist suffuses her songs with empowering lyrics and foot-tapping beats. Her latest single, “Water Me,” might be her best track yet.

“Water Me,” as the title hints, is all about nourishment — specifically yourself. Produced by Grammy-nominated producer Ricky Reed, energetic drums and melodious synth and bass accompany liberating lyrics: “I don’t get dehydrated, I moisturize it daily / I am my inspiration, I am my inspiration.” Lizzo is unapologetically celebrating herself and reminding us that self-nourishment and love are inspiring and important. And the cherry on top of it all? It’s really frickin’ catchy.

The music video exhibits Lizzo’s emphasis on sel- care. On Instagram, she describes the video’s objective: “Water Me’ brings the beauty and freedom of water and self love to life. Self care is in the little moments — bathing, sweating, washing your hair.. it’s in laughing so hard you can barely catch a breath, your lungs expanding on a morning jog… now more than ever we need to enjoy the quiet within ourselves.” With stunning visuals, “Water Me” features an exclusively black ensemble doing these acts of self-care Lizzo was influenced by: running, dancing in the mirror, shampooing and feeling water against your skin.

I don’t know about you, but now I really want a shower.
