There are a lot of tropical influences in your music — it reminds me of [Colombian city] Cartagena! Would you say you pull a lot of your influences from a particular part of Colombia?

Yes, we mix a lot of Caribbean influences, most of which are from the Atlantic coast of Colombia. Cartagena is one of the places that greatly influences my music with the [genre of folk music from the coast of Colombia] “Champeta.” Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Cartagena are areas of the Caribbean zone where I grew up.

What other areas of the world do you pull influences from?

Bomba Estéreo is a band who mixes; therefore, we are not limited to specific sounds. We consist of electronic rhythms, with Afro-Caribbean music, specifically from Colombia. From there, we incorporate music from all over, with roots in Africa, but passing through Europe and the USA. We have a lot of influences, because that’s what we want, a sound that is from everywhere.

Your latest track, “Duele,” is so smooth and driven by electronic elements, combined with a worldly influence. How would you say your music has evolved over time? Can we expect more songs like this in your next album?

Well, we’ve always had soft and sentimental songs, songs to breathe. Even in the second album, we have “Dejame Llorar.” However, “Duele” is a little bit more evolved. I think that you evolve over time, personally, musically, and spiritually. It is a song that tells one of those histories that happens to all of us at some point in life, something in which we can all identify. I think we all evolve with time and experiences.

Your music has a ton of influence and impact on the music community in Colombia. You guys recently played a show with one of my favorites, the incredibly talented Emje Rose in Barranquilla! What are some of your favorite Colombian artists?

In Colombia, we have a lot of talent, and there are many bands that are worth listening too, such as Systema Solar and any Palenque groups.

Your audience reaches thousands of people who sometimes cannot even understand what you are saying. That must feel so powerful, to unite cultures through your music. Where would you say is one of your favorite places to play?

We love to play in other places, to travel and learn about different cultures. We really would love to go to places we’ve never been to before, such as India, Australia and China. It would also be great to return to Japan. These are some places we feel we could do some really interesting things!

Tell me a bit about your vocal style, your technique is so unique and hauntingly beautiful!

My vocal style is “costeña” (from the coast), it is very nasally, like the “cantaoras” (folk singers). It is a mix that I found between rapping and singing. I have been evolving my vocal style with time.

Besides the fact that I love your music, I love that you come from what I think is one of the most amazingly beautiful countries in the world, Colombia. Often times Colombia can get overshadowed by histories of the past. What would you say is one thing you would want the world to know about the true beauty and essence of Colombia?

I think the world is already beginning to know the wonderful parts of Colombia. I think that we’ve crossed the threshold of Colombia being about drugs. Our musicians, artists, and athletes have done a wonderful job greatly heightening the name of Colombia. I think that for about 10 years now, Colombia has a positive visibility. Even more, Colombia is a destination for tourists, one of the most visited in the world; therefore, I think that stigma is over. The TV shows series about drug dealers are part of the history of the country, unfortunately, but the beauty of the country is part of that history, the ugly is also part of it, and this is what has made us the country we are today. Then, just as there are many movies about the Holocaust and the wars and about everything that has happened in the world, there are going to be a lot of stuff about Narcos, because it was an important thing that happened in Colombia and that must be shown for people to judge for themselves. I think that is one thing and another is what is happening in the country, which is very positive and is also being shown. There will be a moment when there are more series and films that talk about this happening, I hope, but I think people already know the greatness of Colombia more and more.

What advice do you have for the youth in Colombia, and across all borders alike when it comes to pursuing their dreams whatever they may be?

Let them do what they want, what they are passionate about, not what people or society tells them to do, what they think it is. I think when you do the things you like and in your own way; they are special and make them have transcendence.

Volver a Japón y visitar China.
