Moana Is Making Waves As The Newest Disney Heroine Of Color

by Madeline Raynor

Disney has revealed a sneak peek of the new movie Moana, which features a heroine of Pacific Islander descent. The title character Moana is a young girl and expert navigator leaves her home to go exploring.

She is voiced by 14-year-old Native Hawaiian Auli’i Cravalho (person of color who is age-appropriate! Double win!). Moana will join Mulan, Tiana, Lilo, Jasmine, Tiger Lily and Pocahontas in the canon of Disney princesses or heroines of color. We are very excited about the progress that Disney is making by representing all races.

The Rock also stars as legendary demi-god Maui. Moana also appears to have an adorable pet pig, which I am very on board with. Also, please enjoy the commentary from the Disney movie surfers, whom I forgot about until I watched this.

Moana hits theaters November 23.
