Xena: The Gay Warrior Princess

by Alyssa Spizzirro

What’s more awesome than badass females clad in leather and metal fighting mythological creatures in Ancient Greece? A lesbian romance between said females. NBC’s upcoming Xena: Warrior Princess reboot will feature more queer visibility, leaving behind the ambiguous structure of past relationships.

Writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach wrote on his Tumblr, “There is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually.” He’s overtly referring to Xena and Gabrielle, who would gently share hugs, kisses, and loving glances throughout the series.

The chemistry and dynamic relationship that was so cleverly hinted at in the ’90s can finally be actualized. And we ship them so hard, because who wouldn’t? The world needs to be exposed to onscreen gay relationships. Xena and Gabrielle are the gayest, cutest warriors to happen to television since they were on television. May this mark an end to heteronormativity being the norm.
