All too often, depictions of women are from a male viewpoint, based on desire for the female form and frequently showing women as passive and available for pleasure.
That’s what makes this art exhibit so refreshing. The Female Gaze: Women Look at Women is a collection of female artists portraying the female form. The exhibit will display multiple media like painting, sculpture, installation, video and photography.
The collection will feature several female artists, including Berenice Abbott, Marina Abramovic, Ghada Amer, Diane Arbus, Vanessa Beecroft, Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois, Julia Margaret Cameron, Victoria Civera, Rineke Dijkstra, Marlene Dumas, Anh Duong, Judith Eisler, Tracey Emin, Ellen Gallagher, Nan Goldin, Katy Grannan, Jenny Holzer, Roni Horn, Chantal Joffe, Deborah Kass, Maria Lassnig, Zoe Leonard, Sally Mann, Marilyn Minter, Joan Mitchell, Alice Neel, Shirin Neshat, Collier Schorr, Joan Semmel, Cindy Sherman, Mickalene Thomas, Hannah van Bart, Hellen van Meene, Kara Walker, Francesca Woodman and Lisa Yuskavage.
The Female Gaze is running from June 25 through September 19 at the Cheim and Read Gallery in Manhattan (547 West 25th Street). -Liza
