Want To Live To 100? Eat Porridge, Cuddle Cats, Avoid Men

by Holly Trantham

We feel like we’ve succeeded if, at some point during the day, we get you to say “Awww!” and “Fuck yeah!” at the same time. So now we would like to introduce 102 year-old Iona and 109 year-old Jessie Gallan, two women who are totally down with the important things in life.

One of those important things? Kitties! Iona recently visited Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Conroe, Texas, and left with her newest companion, Edward, and the cutest photo ever known to humankind:

Iona stated that she’s had cats since she was a child, furthering our suspicion that adopting animals is necessary for a long and happy life (particularly if they are rescues!).

Gallan is the oldest living woman in Scotland, and has recently revealed her secrets to a long life: hard work, never getting married, and a daily bowl of porridge. (Outlander fans know how much Scots love their parritch…it’s not the stuff of fiction, after all!). She left home at age 13 to become a milkmaid, and happily worked many good jobs throughout her life. Currently, she stays active at her elderly care home in Aberdeen, exercising and going to all the concerts, putting the rest of us to shame as we stay home and watch Netflix.

As for men? “They’re more trouble than they’re worth,” she says. We hear you, sister! Next time your nosy family members ask why you’re not getting married, point them in the direction of this lady. Then change the subject to smooshy cats. You’re welcome.
