In response to the Trump administration’s removal of the Obama-era DACA program, which granted conditional residency to undocumented minors, the organizers of the Women’s March are planning a creative action in N.Y.C. this Saurday 2nd December to raise awareness and put pressure on Congress to pass the DREAM Act into law.
By ending DACA, Trump has put 800,000 young people at risk of losing their jobs and being deported from the only country they know as home. The bipartisan Dream Act would protect DACA recipients by providing qualified undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. before the age of 18 a pathway to citizenship, but pressure must be put on Congress to pass a clean DREAM Act before it recesses for the holidays so that these young people can celebrate with their families without fear.
This Women’s March action is a performance art protest called DREAM Killers. 200 people will gather dressed entirely in black and wearing veils (to be supplied). This is a silent performance/protest, so once the veils are on no one will speak. Singer Amy Léon will be at the front of the formation singing an original song that will encompass the message of the performance: If the DREAM Act is not passed you are a DREAM Killer. Once the song is finished the entire procession will walk slowly and silently down the street.
The DREAM Killer Action is an official action by Women’s March with support from undocumented-led groups like United We Dream. This action requires a specific number of participants to create an effective protest and show soldarity with immigrants in these dark times.
