The New Rechargeable Hitachi Magic Wand is a Modern Improvement On An Old Standby

What’s the Buzz?

THE NEW RECHARGEABLE MAGIC WAND IS A MODERN IMPROVEMENT ON AN OLD STANDBY

In the world of vibrators, the Magic Wand is legendary—a veritable Excalibur wielded by many a thrill-seeking Lady of the Lake for top-notch clit stimulation. Hitachi, the original manufacturer, removed its name from the gadget in 2013, but even 48 years after it was first introduced to the retail market as a device to “soothe sore muscles,” the Wand still delivers the same bone-rattling good time. Plus, the durable design means a Wand will last you ages and ages.

That is, until it doesn’t. My poor Magic Wand—one of the OG Hitachi Magic Wands, thank you very much—finally bit the dust a few months ago; the poor dear was whirring away when it gave up the ghost one sad evening. I have other, fancier vibrators that offer all sorts of toe-curling talents, but the Wand is my trusty go-to for a foolproof orgasm. Or, for real, when I’ve hurt my back! Clearly it was time to try out what the new Magic Wand Rechargeable had to offer.

In contrast to my heavy old Magic Wand, which plugged into the wall, had two speeds, and was hella noisy, the new Magic Wand Rechargeable ($124.95, Babeland.com) is lighter, quieter, cordless, and features four vibe patterns and four speed settings, from a chill 2,700 vibrations-per-minute to a dizzying 6,300 vpm.

On the downside, the three control buttons—on/off, speed settings, and patterned vibrations —are all in a row, so it’s really difficult to feel out which is which in the heat of the moment. Plus, it turns itself off after 20 minutes of continuous use. Talk about killing the vibe! (I have yet to hit that dreaded 20-minute cutoff, but the fear still haunts me.)

Despite these small issues, I’m deeply delighted by the Magic Wand Rechargeable. Sure, I still love trying out the latest fancy-ass, USB-charging, thrumming, whirling, G-spotting doodads. But I’ll always want a Magic Wand in my orgasm arsenal.
