GQ has been plugging their new cover star, “the greatest tennis player of all time,” on Twitter this week.
But a number of tennis fans are not having it.
Serena Williams has won more Grand Slam singles titles than any other player (23, to Federer’s 18) but as experts point out, there is no one concrete way to determine the greatest tennis player of all time, especially across both men’s and women’s tennis. Should it be based on singles titles? Prize money? Time spent at No. 1?
Fox Sports’ Chris Chase had this to say about Williams in January:
“Serena Williams, now the winner of the most Grand Slams in the history of professional tennis, is undisputedly the best player to ever step on the court. Her serve is one of the biggest weapons sports has ever seen. She hits with power and precision. Her athleticism keeps her in points and her footwork is vastly underrated, overshadowed by her strength. The only opponent she’s ever had trouble with is herself. Serena Williams is the most dominant tennis player ever, full stop.” 
Serena Williams is not only a champion on the court; she and sister Venus have played a key role in making professional tennis a more equitable sport.
Whether Williams is or isn’t the greatest player of all time is impossible to prove. But the same goes for Federer. This as just another example of what Williams has fought against: women’s tennis being sidelined. ‘Greatest tennis player of all time’ is not an automatic substitute for ‘greatest men’s tennis player of all time.’
