Samantha Bee Has A Message For Men Planning Their “#MeToo Redemption”

by Lydia Wang

Samantha Bee wants you to know that the future is female—or, at least, it had better be, because she’s “done with this shit.”

In a segment last night on the host’s TBS show Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Bee tore into Eric Schneiderman, the New York attorney general who resigned earlier this week after The New Yorker published allegations that he had hit, choked, and threatened four women.

Back in November, Schneiderman was a guest on Bee’s show. The former attorney, Bee mentioned last night, “positioned himself as a feminist crusader, championed the Me Too movement, and filed a civil rights lawsuit against Harvey Weinstein.” But this doesn’t mean Bee’s about to cut him any slack.

“Schneiderman was a guest on my show, so this is a little complicated for me to talk about,” she begins. “But just kidding, it’s not complicated. Fuck you, Eric Schneiderman.”

In the segment, Bee also focuses on men like Weinstein, Mario Batali, Garrison Keillor, and Charlie Rose (who’s reportedly planning a talk show about sexual harassment) who are already plotting their comebacks—and shares some advice for them: “Nobody knows better than you how many people you’ve assaulted or harassed, maybe before you pitch a TV show about it, ask yourself, ‘Have all the women I’ve nonconsensually showed my penis come forward in the press?’ If the answer is no, go away. If the answer is yes, also go away. If I’ve said anything that applies to you, just fuck off, catch ya later fellas.”

She adds, “As long as you want to keep playing whack-a-mole from hell, it is my solemn promise that I will keep picking up the metaphorical hammer to slam you back down and remind you that you have not yet done anything to earn our forgiveness. So take your millions of dollars and pay a therapist to care about how tough it’s been to get caught being an abuser because honestly, I don’t give a shit.”

And as for men like Schneiderman? It can be a whole new level of upsetting when a man considered an ally lets us down. But, as Bee reminds us, Tarana Burke started the Me Too movement 11 years ago: “Men like Eric Schneiderman, we don’t need them. You know who’s a better advocate for women? Women.”
