These Adorable Photos of Dogs Searching for Their Forever Home Will Melt Your Heart

by Patty Affriol

There’s a new heart-warming book that captures the journey of adoption of our beloved furry friends. For over three years, fashion and portrait photographer Richard Phibbs has made portraits of dogs up for adoption for the Humane Society of New York, in an attempt to help them find their “forever homes.” The book, Rescue Me: Dog Adoption Portraits and Stories From New York City, features the best of these portraits in hope of getting more homeless dogs adopted.

The book is hitting stores at a time when puppy mills — the horrific warehouses that supply most of the dogs in puppy stores and newspaper ads — plagues the US. While not every dog for sale comes from filthy cramped cages, the need for so many dogs to be adopted is enough to stay clear of breeders. There are approximately 3.9 million dogs in shelters at the moment looking for their long-term homes. Rescue Me depicts portraits of dogs in an attempt to get people out there and adopt!

The photographs in the book are much more than adorable portraits; they also include stories of many of the dogs’ rough path to adoption. Writer and activist James Victore illustrates the dogs’ abandonment and rejection through to rescue and love. It’s a moving read designed to warm your day and your soul — as all royalties will the go to the Humane Society in New York.
