Meet Miss Subways

by Web Intern

There’s a new exhibition opening tonight that celebrates New York beauties past (and present). Fiona Gardner‘s photographs are of ten former Miss Subways as they are today.

Miss Subways was a contest from 1941-1976 in which young women of New York were crowned — without any pomp and circumstance — and their photos displayed on the subway for all to see.

The women are all middle aged and older today, and Gardner’s photo series shows them wearing sashes and crown juxtaposed against the circumstances of their daily lives.

Her exhibit opens tonight, April 17, with a reception from 6-8 pm. It’s at the Rush Arts Gallery–project space at 526 West 26th Street suite 311 in Manhattan. The hours are Tuesday-Friday 1pm-6pm. It runs until May 31.
