While reminiscent of introspective UK shoegaze groups like My Bloody Valentine and Lush, Roanoke, Virginia trio, Eternal Summers’ sound on their brand new album, The Drop Beneath, shouldn’t be so simply defined.
Eternal Summers have been described as post punk and minimal pop, but the sound on The Drop Beneath includes a pretty edgy dream pop tone that is totally dark and deliberate. It just happens to be one of those (often rare) albums that is a breeze to listen to in its entirety.
Since we’re so darn close to the sweet glow of spring on the horizon, and craving mood-boosters in any form, the everlastingness of warm bass and Nicole Yun’s silky lead vocals on singles “Gouge” and “Keep Me Away” will surely melt your winter blues.
Yun gives some insight to the thought behind the record: “The title track of the album, The Drop Beneath, serves as a thesis statement for us as musicians – a call to step out of our own artistic barriers and literally take the plunge.” In allowing themselves to explore a sound beyond their musical comfort zone, the talented threesome have created an album that is deserving of being the soundtrack to this year’s sunny seasons.
