Kristen Stewart Comes Out In New Interview: ‘I’m Just Really In Love With My Girlfriend’

by Erika W. Smith

Kristen Stewart is in love — and we’re so happy for her.

In a new interview with Elle UK, KStew opens up about her relationship with her girlfriend, Alicia Cargile, for the first time.

“Right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend,” Kristen says in the interview. “We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.’”

Many people are calling this Kristen Stewart’s coming out — and it certainly is the first time she’s publicly spoken about her relationship. But, when asked, she’s seemed to acknowledge that she’s not straight before. Earlier this year, she told Variety, “I’m not hiding shit. Me not defining it right now is the whole basis of what I’m about. If you don’t get it, I don’t have time for you.” Last year, she told Nylon, “Google me, I’m not hiding.”

In the Elle UK interview, Kristen explains why she decided to go public with her relationship now, saying, “When I was dating a guy [her Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson] I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized, so I didn’t like it. We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something it’s not.’ I didn’t like that.”

She adds, “But then it changed when I started dating a girl. I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public. It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”

Over at Autostraddle, Stef Schwartz breaks down the timeline of Kristen and Alicia’s relationship, pointing out that the media’s coverage of the couple leaves a lot to be desired: “The tabloids called them roommates, gal pals, best friends — anything but girlfriends, which they very clearly were.” She adds, “Now that Kristen is finally comfortable being visible as a famous person who is not straight, we are really excited to see what her future holds.”

We’re so happy for you, Kristen!
