Jenny Slate In The OBVIOUSLY Hilarious And Charming Abortion Rom-Com

by kelsey haight

You may remember our post about a kickstarter for the “Obvious Child short released a few years ago. Well, thanks to many generous folks and the talented work of Gillian Robespierre, along with her friends Anna Bean (a beloved ex-BUST intern!) and Karen Maine, we finally get to see a subversive comedy about laughing at love, life, and abortion!

Gillian Robespierre, Bean and Maine came up with the story through their frustration with limited representation of women’s experiences with pregnancy and love. Thankfully, these bad-asses took it one step further and made it subversive by filming in the same style as their favorite romantic comedies, so keep your eyes peeled for it in theaters June 6th.

This female-driven comedy features Donna Stern (Jenny Slate) as a down in the dumps but witty stand up comedienne who literally loses it all while lol-ing. The film follows Donna as she gets dumped, fired and pregnant right before the worst/best Valentine’s Day of her life. Like any confused twenty-something, she tries to recoup self-respect through a one-night stand with a handsome, goody-two shoe. Care to guess what happens next? “I’m having your abortion, do you want to share a dessert?” I honestly can’t think of a better way to address an unplanned pregnancy with a total stranger.

It’s unclear whether “Obvious Child” is a play on words regarding Donna’s dysfunctional, child-like life or that this baby abortion helps her grow in an unexpected way. This film is quirky and witty but far surpasses its pregnancy counterparts like Juno or Knocked Up with a crew of folks determined to depict abortion simply as a part of life and nothing to be ashamed of. This film also depicts the value of keeping a sense of humor when life gives ya shit!

Plus, it features a whopping load of New York performers like Gabby Hoffmann, Gabe Liedman, Jake Lacy, Polly Draper and David Cross who are clever as all get out. “Obvious Child” is more then an ode to a young adults mishaps, it’s a film about accurately representing women’s experiences and elevating the spirit of one of the funniest comediennes out there.
