Last night was the series finale of Scrubs . In this intern’s humble opinion, it went out well. It managed to celebrate its 8-year run but it didn’t sacrifice characters or formula for the sake of sentimentality. J.D. was still a nerdy dreamer, Elliot was still slightly neurotic, Cox was still a sarcastic grump (with a heart), the Janitor was still psychotic and Turk was still, well, Turk.
I think it honored itself really well. They tied up all the loose ends without buttoning everything up airtight for the rest of the characters’; lives (like Will & Grace did).
I won’t say anything more specific so I don’t ruin it for anyone who has it waiting at home in their DVR.
I thought this was a great show. I remember when I was in high school and it started, it was really unique and fresh. They managed to keep that up pretty steadily for 8 years. There were always guest stars (ranging from Colin Ferrell to Gary Busey to Clay Aiken to Courtney Cox) and fantasy sequences and lots of silly humor.
Now, I know this show hasn’t been perfect. First off, last year’s writers’ strike threw of what was supposed to be its final season – not only was it severely shortened, the episodes didn’t air in order and, frankly, a few of them were kind of lame (and obviously thrown together quickly). Also, it has had some comedic missteps over the years. Most obvious to me is how often they made fun of fat people – come on, I always thought they were better and more original than that. Some will say that the musical episode was a mistake too, though I loved it (where else will you find a song called ”Everything Comes Down to Poo?”). But hey, no show is perfect.
Overall, though, it was a great show and had a good, long run. I’m going to miss it. And I’m going to keep my DVR set to record the reruns. -Liza
