Huzzah! Lower Age for OTC Plan B

by Web Intern

Good news on the reproductive rights front – the FDA lowered the minimum age to buy OTC Plan B to 17. It was 18.

One year may not seem like a big difference, but it would be to a 17-year-old who is panicking and wondering what she’s going to do because she realized a condom broke or she had a moment of poor judgment and didn’t use one.

Now might be the time to keep on reminding people that Plan B is:

-Not an abortion. It is not mifepristone (RU486) or even related to it.

-A really high dose of birth control that will prevent ovulation and implantation but not terminate an existing pregnancy.

-About 89% effective if taken within 3 days of unprotected sex.

Now if only we could place limits on judgmental pharmacists. -Liza
