Gotta Collect ‘Em All!

by Web Intern

When I was a kid, I found the concept of collecting things – tchotchkes, Barbies, stamps, and so on – to be very cool. Unfortunately, I was too cheap and impatient to start a collection myself, so it never ever really went past Spice Girls stickers for me. I must not have been the only one who found it interesting considering the obsessive trends of the past that had to do with collecting. Remember the ridiculously high prices rare Beanie Babies and Pokemon cards would fetch during the late ’90s/early 2000’s?

‘American Collectors’, a documentary film by Terri Krantz and Bob Ridgley, explores people’s fascination with collecting things ranging from bobbleheads to axes to tractors to memorabilia devoted to a specific decade or band or person. Some collectors spend their whole life on their collections, forsaking human interaction or perhaps avoiding it. Nearly 30% of Americans are collectors, and this film wants to show the motivation behind people’s need to collect as well as telling the story of how the collection came to be.
