Calling all word nerds! The Williamsburg Spelling Bee has more contests coming up. In fact, there are five more competitions before the finals on June 22. So grab your dictionary and start brushing up on your 50-cent words.

Last year’s big winner went home with $150 and a twenty-volume-long 80th anniversary edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (I know it’s tradition, but wouldn’t the dictionary be better used by the losing competitors?). He also got a nifty trophy to show off.

The Bee’s 9th season competitions are being help at Pete’s Candy Store on Lorimer St in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The contests are April 13 and 27, May 11 and 25, and June 8 at 7:30 PM (sign-up starts at 7). They cut off at 25 people, so get there early if you want to C-O-M-P-E-T-E. The top 3 winners from each contest go to the finals on June 22.

In 8th grade I won my middle school’s spelling bee with”superstitious.” I would hope for more of a challenge when there aren’t any 13-year-olds competing. Incidentally, I still have the dictionary that was my prize, but it’s not nearly as badass as a multi-volume OED.
